Leaders From Each Other

Leading a district through diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) work is hard and messy. Leaders From Each Other is an article that just came out this month and I have already read it three times. The article speaks to the heart of why many times DEIB initiatives in our districts get stuck. It requires 1) joint ownership (BIPOC and white staff) when doing the work, and 2) everyone needs to know how to do the personal work on their own internal triggers and biases. Only when we authentically do these two things can we begin to dismantle racism and jointly rebuild systems that provide our students the climate conducive to thriving academically and socially.

What to Do When You Don't Trust Your Employee

Intuitively we know our best results as leaders are achieved through constructive, positive, and trusting teams. When we are blessed with, or have built a team of all-stars, and trust may be uncomplicated. Trust can be more challenging when we join a new team or start a new project. Of course, we all like to believe a lack of trust can be attributed to “It’s them not me.”  I appreciated this article because it narrates practical steps that can be applied to create a space to recuperate and build trust.

Be the Leader Maker: 5 Ways to Turn Managers into Leaders

Leaders today are confronting an environment that often feels like a magnitude of change that could only be possible if the disparity of the Great Depression collided with the innovation and prosperity of the mid 1980s through the end of the century. Exceptional loss of life and a reconsideration of time-cherished values are intersecting with innovation moving faster than most organizations can comprehend. Becoming a Leader Maker demands a new paradigm that calls for old-world courage, intensively focused communications, and the abandonment of notoriety. This approach of leadership is not about surviving, it’s about thriving with others with greater impact.

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking

by Susan Cain

Balancing the needs of team members is a crucial aspect of effective leadership. This book is one I come back to often and one I recommend to other team leaders.  The research in this book allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of not only myself, but also of the different personality types on my teams.  It provides great strategies for inclusive leadership that incorporate the communication preferences of quieter team members.  These members are empathic, introspective and careful listeners.  Learning how to leverage and amplify the qualities of these individuals within a team can boost overall team performance and satisfaction.

The Adaptation Advantage

by Heather E. McGowan and Chris Shipley

The Adaptation Advantage” by Heather E. McGowan and Chris Shipley examines the future of work, focusing on mindset and suggesting action steps to navigate whatever comes. Rather than being terrified of the future, the authors highlight our human capacity and inclination to adapt, whereby we can use technology to our advantage, capitalizing on the time saved to continue evolving. Our best path forward is to set aside our job titles and our “occupation identity”, connecting instead to purpose and meaning in work, while at the same time seeking delight in learning and growth. Automation and AI is all around us, but it will never replace our humanity – our spirit, our adaptive functionality, and our prowess. A must-read for leading into the future.
