"Whatever It Is, I'm Against It" Resistance to Change in Higher Education
by Brian Rosenberg
Last week, the Chronicle of Higher Education published an article, excerpted from a book by Brian Rosenberg, a retired college president, entitled “Whatever It Is, I’m Against It.” The book served for me as both a guidepost for the future and a sort of therapy session, as it reminded me of the dire need to re-think how to manifest change in the most change-resistant industry that exists. I’ve realized that embracing change and “running toward the fire” is the only way to save the higher education industry from a perilous season as the headwinds we face become insurmountable.

The Great Upheaval: Higher Education's Past, Present, and Uncertain Future
by Arthur Levine and Scott Van Pelt
It’s not coming...it’s here. The industrial system of higher education, founded over 100 years ago is being shaped into a “knowledge economy.” Our increasingly diverse population operating in a highly technological, globalized society is creating it. The foundational structures of the Carnegie Unit, where time is the currency of learning is being replaced by outcomes assessment of knowledge, skills, and abilities independent of time. The classroom can be anywhere, the student a teacher, and the teacher a mentor. For me, this book places a call to action for higher education brain trusts to move beyond TITWWADI (That Is The Way We’ve Always Done It) and co-create the higher education system of the future.
